Fixes
  • Fixed an issue with AI Receptionist occasionally saying technical phrases from its instructions while qualifying new leads. Now, AI Receptionist will maintain its natural call flow as expected.
Improvements
Live Agent Escalation for Unmatched Transfer Requests
— When a caller repeatedly requests to speak with a person or department not found in your Team Directory, your AI Receptionist will now escalate to one of our Virtual Receptionists. This improves the experience for callers who are looking to speak with a person in cases when AI Receptionist is unable to find a matching name in your Team Directory.
New Features

Background Noise Controls
You can now add subtle ambient sound to all calls with the flip of a toggle! This setting helps keep callers engaged, ensuring they know they’re still connected even when your AI Receptionist is processing complex requests.

Improvements
Dynamic Playbook Correction
— AI Receptionist now switches call handling playbooks mid-call when callers correct themselves or provide new context. For example, if a caller initially says they're an existing client but later clarifies they're new, AI Receptionist will automatically pivot from the Existing Client call handling playbook to the Potential New Client playbook for improved accuracy.
Fixes
  • Fixed an issue where AI Receptionist would repeat the closing statement at the end of a call. AI Receptionist now delivers the single statement configured for each respective call type.
New Features
📲
Caller ID Controls for Transfers
You can now choose which caller ID appears for calls transferred from AI Receptionist: either your Smith.ai number or the caller’s number. This update lets you prioritize answering according to your preferences.
To adjust this setting, navigate to your call handling settings in your AI Receptionist dashboard. Simply select your preferred option under

AI Receptionist Update: July 24, 2025

New Features
🗣️
Live Agent Call Routing [in beta]
Live agent call routing combines the efficiency of AI with human empathy and flexibility — all within your existing AI Receptionist account. At your discretion, qualified callers can be immediately routed to one of Smith.ai’s professional Virtual Receptionists.
Harness the best of both worlds:
  • Efficient screening — AI Receptionist answers and qualifies every caller, quickly and predictably.
  • Direct control — You control who speaks with a live agent, whether they’re an existing client or a potential new customer.
  • One playbook — We follow the same call handling instructions whether a caller speaks to AI or a human.
Learn how to enable live agent call routing in our help doc.

Improvements
Streamlined Call Flow
— We redesigned AI Receptionist’s call flow to improve the caller experience. To reduce redundancy, AI Receptionist now qualifies callers — per your qualification instructions — prior to collecting their contact details.
Fixes
  • Fixed an issue where AI Receptionist did not consistently announce it was transferring the caller to schedule an appointment. The AI Receptionist now reliably informs callers of intent to transfer for appointment scheduling.
  • Fixed an issue with smart team directory transfers where AI Receptionist didn’t clarify which person to transfer to when multiple team members with the same first name exist in the team directory. AI Receptionist now prompts callers to specify the correct person.
  • Fixed an issue where AI Receptionist remained in FAQ mode after a caller’s question, treating subsequent interactions in the call as questions. It now exits FAQ mode correctly and continues the normal call flow.
New Features
💳 Payment Collection for Scheduling
Great news: You can now collect payment during scheduling with AI Receptionist! Reduce appointment no-shows by collecting a deposit or having callers pay a consultation fee up front.
  • Works for new & existing clients
    — Enable scheduling with payment for current or prospective customers (or both.)
  • Easy setup
    — Use a link to any calendar or form that has embedded payment collection.
  • Seamless scheduling
    — Convert more callers into booked business while they’re still on the line.

AI Receptionist Update: July 10, 2025

New Features
📱 Smart Team Directory Transfers
Your Team Directory can now be used to seamlessly connect callers to the right team member upon request. With this feature enabled, AI Receptionist will automatically transfer callers to the right team member when they ask for a member of your Team Directory by name.
With the check of a box, your AI Receptionist can:
  • Understand when a caller asks to speak to a member of your Team Directory
  • Request the caller’s name and reason for calling prior to transferring
  • Bypass your call playbook and transfer the caller directly to their requested team member
You can enable team directory transfers in your call handling settings. Check out our HelpDoc for easy setup instructions.
Improvements
Custom Service-Based Qualification Question
— For call playbooks with service type qualification enabled, you can now customize how your AI Receptionist asks about callers’ service needs.
Expanded Qualifying Service Fields
— We’ve added an additional 10 fields so you can now list up to 20 options for service-based qualification.
Enhanced Qualification Flow
— When service-based qualification is in use, AI Receptionist now detects whether a caller’s inquiry matches an available service type without having to list the service options.

Improvements
AI Receptionist Conversational UX
— We’ve made an improvement that prevents the AI Receptionist from repeatedly confirming the reason for the call and requesting additional data redundantly, resulting in a smoother experience.
Add Appointment Booking Identifier to Playbook
— We've added structured appointment-related fields to the AI Receptionist playbook, enabling AI Receptionist to more accurately confirm whether an appointment was booked during a call. This ensures that appointment details such as date, time, key actions taken, and who the appointment was scheduled with are included in call summaries and available for you to view.
Fixes
  • We fixed a bug where AI Receptionist would take too long to recognize the caller’s answer.
Fixes
  • We fixed a bug in which the AI Receptionist asked, “Are you still there?” during Spanish calls. Now, the AI Receptionist says, “¿Estás ahí?” on Spanish-language calls instead.
Fixes
  • We fixed a bug where the AI’s closing message wasn't always translated correctly in Spanish. Your Spanish-speaking callers will now hear a properly translated, professional closing for a more consistent experience from start to finish.
